Flogging For Cripplers

We gripped off a couple people with this Dickcissel yesterday. Yes, I know exactly how funny that sounds. Point Reyes, California.

I just stumbled on this fantastic Wikipedia page on the vocabulary of twitchers. Twitchers, as some of you know, are what the Brits call hardcore birders. It's damn funny. Some of these words already enjoy use in the U.S., and some of them don't at all.

This page is also appropriate because moments ago I found out that no other than a Falcated Duck, a true sibe megacrippler (they look like this), has been located (and confirmed by another observer) at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge. Hopefully it will not be shot by the time I get there tomorrow, although I may grind my teeth to dust in anticipation before then.

  1. !!! THAT is one FREAKIN' AWESOME bird!!! We're flying out of Sac airport in about 1.5 weeks, so I'm guessing that's too late, but LOADY I wanna see that thing. Not sure I've even heard of it. Best of luck with that one. Thanks for the linguistic link.

  2. Yeah, hopefully it sticks, it is a sexy beast (I did actually see it). I wish it was closer though...if you do go, bring a scope!
