And So It Begins

It really happened. Much to my surprise, I really drove halfway across the U.S. to work in south Texas. Seriously. I'm drinking Lone Star this very second. It tastes like Texas. It is pouring rain outside and thunder is booming overhead. At night I can hear Pauraques and Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks fly over the apartment, which is right across the street from my new patch. Ringed Kingfisher is probably my favorite bird there so far, although Green Jays are hard to discount. Today I met the most-photographed individual bird in the U.S., which I obviously also photographed. I will be sampling the local bird community frequently and intensely, which is what I also hope to do with the local Mexican restaurant community.

Our crew apartment just got the internet tonight. Soon you can expect full and horrible coverage of things that happened in New Mexico (like the Black Rosy-Finch above) and the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Three lifers since I left California so far has me very pretty stoked. I've got to say most years the birding I experience in early March is poor or just complete rubbish, but this year is an exception.

  1. By the time you leave, you'll have a strange love/hate relationship with Lone Star.

What's the most photographed bird? Pauraque at Estero?

  2. if you think CA birding is rubbish in March, you should try the especially rancid flavor here in Michigan
