Showdown In Arroyo Grande

The Great Ornithologist Felonious Jive wrote about Ivory Gull related heartbreak and heartache yesterday on 10,000 Birds...read all about it here. Oh, and some (mostly) good news on the Endangered Species front over here.

Above are a bunch of birds that are not endangered nor Ivory Gulls, including Thayer's Gull (foreground) with a phalanx of Black Skimmers for contrast. Santa Barbara, CA.

  1. Do you have any suggestions on a good gull ID book or other resource? I am sitting here on the coast looking at gulls all the time and they all look the same or look very different but are just immature gulls. Gulls really make me want to quit pretending that I like birding. Even more so than sparrows and warblers.

  2. @JK - The relatively new Peterson Gulls of the Americas guide is your best bet...although it's a bit intimidating. If it makes you feel any better, I've been struggling with gull i.d. since 1994...I've gotten a lot better, but gulls are still a bitch.
