Pic Of The Week: Brownsville

"I cannot pretend to feel impartial about colors. I rejoice with the brilliant ones and am genuinely sorry for the poor browns." - Winston Churchill

Whatever Winston. How many shades of brown do you see? Burrowing Owls wear the perfect plumage for what must surely be their favorite color. Photographed near Westmorland, CA.

  1. Yes, Churchill never did become super famous for his paintings. Perhaps this quote helps reveal a limiting bias or creative compunction on his part.

I count about 23 different shades of brown, which is A LOT of feeling sorry to do if one is in keeping with Churchill's sentiment. I really like the palette of textures here on the three levels of the Owl's perch. If ever I am writing a color-coded kid's book, this would be the picture to use for demonstrating the color brown, no doubt.

Totally dig your 'bokeh' too; it's better than colorful flowers.

  2. I actually love brown tones in bird's plumage, poor Winston was short-sighted. A true artist embraces all colors.

There are a lot of browns in a Burrowing Owl image (I posted one today that shoots a moon) and I love to watch the juvies plumage develop, it is fascinating.

    1. Yeah, you've got some nice images yourself over there. I still don't have a flight shot!

  3. Love it! Great shot, even with all that brown.
