Grass Is A Delicious Food

If you are seeking refuge from strange deluge of bird bloggers trying to sell you bird-related Christmas gifts, you've come to the right place my friends. Nothing to look at here except for a grass-eating goose.

It seems that grass is a delicious food. All geese love it. Coots love it. Wigeon love it. Hoofed mammals love it. Even dogs and cats eat it...I've clearly been missing out. It must be pretty good.

This Greater White-fronted Goose was extremely content with its patch of grass. The grass was so tasty that it's fantastic taste completely overwhelmed any fear of humans the goose may have had. Considering my feelings about most people, I probably should have gotten down there and started grazing myself.

This cooperative goose was photographed at Lake Merced, San Francisco, CA.

  1. What a fine fresh greens salad the day after Thanksgiving. This would be a good tactical meal for many the full former feaster.

  2. Grass might be tastey with some salad dressing on it, a Raspberry Balsamic Vinagrette perhaps?

    Love the Geese images.

  3. Cute, happy nibbler. My chickens also love grass, much to the surprise of visitors, but they eat some here, some there, with liberal amounts of bugs, and the occasional unlucky lizard, in between. If I'm trying to eat more veggies (and fewer bugs), the fervent delight chickens express when I walk towards them bearing baby-lettuce-mix does make me look at it twice. But, they've never had bacon or chocolate, so....

    1. There's nothing wrong with a good lettuce mix...I'm about to consume a very large amount of spinach myself.

  4. sir, your photos delight as always! If a young birder like myself were going to San Fran/Oakland for a few days in December what spot would you most strongly recommend I visit/bird?

    1. Hi J, thanks for the flattery. Well it depends on what you want to see and how mobile you are...in Oakland I would recommend Lake Merritt, which is mentioned in this blog a lot, where there are a lot of tame diving ducks and waders, and a dependable Tufted Duck. In San Francisco areas of Golden Gate Park can be fun mid-winter. If you want more specifics feel free to drop me an email.
